Dr. Tom Thompson is Outstanding Alumnus of the Year

Dr. Tom Thompson graduated from ACU in 1985 with a degree in Agronomy. From there he went to Texas A&M University and earned an M.S. in Soil Chemistry and Fertility and then a Ph.D. in Soil Chemistry from Iowa State University.

In 1991, Dr. Thompson began his teaching career at the University of Arizona. He moved to Texas Tech University in 2006 and spent five years there. Since 2011, he has worked at Virginia Tech University as a Professor and Department Head of Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences.

Dr. Thompson teaches undergraduate and graduate courses and advises graduate students. His primary area of research interest is efficient nutrient and water management for irrigated and dryland crops. He has published 47 refereed journal articles and garnered more than $4.5 million in extramural research funding.

His most recent honors include being named a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy and the Soil Science Society of America in 2010. Dr. Thompson was presented these honors in November at the organization’s annual international meetings in Long Beach, Calif.

As Head of the Department of Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences at Virginia Tech, he leads a department with 21 faculty, 250 undergraduate and graduate students, a research portfolio of more than $3.5 million per year, and extension responsibilities across the Commonwealth of Virginia.
