John M. Powell is Young Professional of the Year

John Powell graduated from ACU in 2002 with a degree in Agribusiness. In February 2003, Powell began his career with USDA Rural Development as a Loan Assistant in the Texas State Office in Temple.

While in the State Office, Powell worked in the Community Programs division and specialized in financing multimillion dollar projects for cities, districts and nonprofit organizations throughout the state.  Powell also held several collateral duties including Business and Industry State Loan Committee member, Geographic Information Systems Coordinator and the State Environmental Coordinator.

In October 2010, John was promoted to Area Director where he oversees operations in three offices in Abilene, Brownwood and Ozona.  These offices cover thirty-three counties in West Central Texas and the Concho Valley, providing funding for rural communities in the areas of business, community, infrastructure, and housing.

Powell is currently based in the Abilene Area Office and resides in Clyde, TX with his wife, Bethany Hughes Powell (’01) and seven-year-old son Caleb. Powell and his family are members of Hamby Church of Christ.
