Letter of Intent

Dear Colleagues,

I respectfully submit this portfolio, which is an application for tenure and promotion at Abilene Christian University, in accordance with ACU’s tenure and promotion procedure described in the faculty handbook. At the conclusion of the fall 2013 semester, I will have completed six years of teaching as a full-time tenure-track faculty member in the Department of Art & Design at ACU. Prior to teaching at ACU, I was a practicing architect at a mid-size architecture firm in Nashville, Tennessee. Although I have spent most of my time over the past five and a half years teaching, I do maintain an active architecture license in the state of Texas and a small design business.

The intent of this portfolio is to clearly and concisely communicate my contributions to the University, Abilene and beyond through four general criteria: teaching, scholarship, service and collegiality. Additionally, and more importantly, this portfolio contains personal reflections and self-evaluations on each of those four criteria. I can honestly say that I have learned much more during my time here than I have taught. (Rest assured, I have taught a lot too!) This as an organic document, or work-in-progress, that represents a snapshot in time, which will most certainly change immediately after it is captured. I hope you get a sense of my commitment to and respect for the university, department and students that I serve through its contents.

As for navigating the site, the four general criteria and a fifth category labeled “Supplemental Information” are listed above in the main navigation bar with each having subcategories listed in the fly-out menu. Each of those pages may contain links to supplemental materials and evidence. I’ve attempted to provide cross-referencing throughout the document with links where needed.

I look forward to continued growth, both personally and professionally, at this institution, and I welcome any and all comments that will push me to realize more of my potential and that of my students. It has been a joy to be part of such an encouraging community.

Sincerely,

byoung sig
