Amazing Statistics

In this inspirational and brilliant discussion, Swedish statistician and professor of global Health, Hans Rosling reveals the connections between global life expectancy and the gross domestic product of different nations.  Rosling is using an empirical approach to reveal connections that lie hidden behind massive amounts of data.  As you watch this TED talk, consider the following questions:

  • What makes Rosling’s data so compelling?  What other pieces of information would be important to consider in thinking about global health and wealth?
  • How does the introduction of time (data viewed as increasing/decreasing year by year – but viewed in real time) change the way you perceive the data?  Is that fair for Rosling to do?  Does the motion of data lose any significance because of its animation?  If so, what does it lose?  What does it gain?
