Sheryl WuDunn, journalist and author, has recently published (with Nick Kristof) the book Half the Sky, which looks at the global oppression of women. In this talk at the TED conference, she discusses a first-hand account of witnessing how the education of one girl in China changed the future of that girl’s family and village. From this account, WuDunn urges us to think critically about the treatment of women worldwide.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
- How does her talk illustrate the connections between how people treat large groups and how they treat individuals?
- Are there examples from your own life where girls and/or women were not allowed to flourish or openly pursue their own future?
- What are other population groups–in Abilene, in your hometown, in your country–that have faced similar instances of rejection and oppression?
