As we turn our attention to the 2015-2016 Images of Aging photo contest, let’s remember Tsuneko Sasamoto. Sasamoto is Japan’s first woman photo-journalist. She began her career in 1940.

And Sasamoto was born in 1914, the daughter of a kimono dealer.
Her photography reflects onsite images from Hiroshima, Antarctica, and topics such as suffrage and world-wide old age.

Here are three jewels of advice from Sasamoto:

1. “It’s essential to remain positive about your life and never give up”

2. “You should never become lazy”

3. “You need to push yourself and stay aware, so you can move forward”
