This year we have a new feature on the PGC Blog. Every week, we will highlight somethingĀ  interestingly research-based, note-worthy, and/or funĀ  at the Pruett Gerontology Center!

This week’s highlights center on the ways that older adults stay connected online, courtesy of Linda Rutledge at Abilene Regional Medical Center.

Did you know:

  • 39 million people age 65 and older are using popular online platforms to connect
  • 14.8 million people age 65 and older use social media
  • Social media use among older adults has increased 1448% over 2015

browsersAdults in the 74+ demographic are the fastest-growing demographic among social networks. Older adults, connect online for the same reasons as younger adults:
***to connect with others (40%)
***to share photos (30%)
***to connect on social gaming (20%)
***to enter online contests and games (10%)

So, grandkids, text your grandparents today!
