The editors, staff, faculty sponsors, and ACU English Department are pleased to announce the release of the 2012 Shinnery Review. Thank you to all the students who submitted their work and everyone who helped and was involved in the development and publication of this year’s issue. We had a fantastic turnout at last night’s Black Tulip, the magazine release party and open mic night, and we’d like thank everyone who joined us and the students and professors who read from their work.

For an online, readable version of this year’s magazine, visit our Issue Archives page. You’ll also find there the full version of Marshall Fox’s “The Kiss,” a fantastic piece of fiction.

Again, many thanks to everyone who made this year and this issue a success! We’re so excited to be releasing another great magazine this year.

After receiving nearly 200 submissions of poetry, fiction, photography, and art–from more than 50 ACU students–the Shinnery editors and staff are working this week to finish sifting through all the great submissions and decide on the content of this year’s magazine. We received lots of very impressive submissions, and we’re excited for the upcoming issue. We’re also excited to have ACU’s very own James Utley, a graduating graphic design major, designing the magazine for us (see the cover design below).

So, mark your calendars for the Black Tulip, our annual release party, on Thursday, April 26th, at 7:30 p.m. in Shore Art Gallery. We’ll be giving out free copies of the magazine, so make sure to stop by and pick up your own personal copy. The evening will also feature readings from the authors published in this year’s issue, an open mic for anyone interested in sharing poetry or music, and lots of delicious refreshments (of course). Everyone is invited, so bring your friends, and join us for an evening of talent and fun!

Four paragraphs of fame!

Last year’s Shinnery Review recently merited a review from FUSE, the Forum for Undergraduate Student Editors based as Susquehanna University.

The review commended the magazine for giving “the reader a glimpse of the unseen and tangled undercarriage of human experience, that complicated infrastructure which feeds the evocative poetry and prose.” Their complimentary review of the magazine is much appreciated, and we’re working this year to “surpass their expectations” once again.

Well, it’s 2012 now, and we figured that means it’s about time for The Shinnery to finally enter the digital age.

So, welcome to our new website, where we’ll be posting news about events, meetings, and the magazine throughout the year. You can find contact information, details on how to submit your work, links to sites about how to improve your creative endeavors, and, of course, a weekly poem. We’re also trying out some new ideas this year with our website–online PDF versions of the magazine that you and your friends and family can access, as well as a new, online-only digital short films submission category.

Visit us in the Inkwell, too, for our weekly small group Elevensies Chapel meetings.

But what about Elevensies?! -Bilbo Baggins

Well, join us every Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Inkwell (downstairs Chambers Hall) for our weekly small-group Chapel. We’ll read a few poems, discuss upcoming events, drink tea–and we may even have a pancake bar occasionally.
