Grading Criteria

Establishing grades for projects of a creative nature is a more complex matter than grading in other academic areas. While each project contains certain objective criteria which may be evaluated quantitatively, a significant portion of each grade is derived from a broader, more subjective set of criteria.

Unless stated otherwise, the following criteria are used to establish the grade for each project:

Process = 50%:

  • Research (examining related work and precedent)
  • Writing
  • Ideation (formation of ideas or concepts)
  • Sketching
  • Physical exploration (mock-ups, models, rough compositions, etc.)
  • Participation in peer reviews/critiques
  • Incorporating individual’s agenda and parameters to project

Product = 50%:

  • Resolution of design process
  • Clarity of concept
  • Final composition
  • Craftsmanship
  • Attention to detail
  • Verbal communication
  • Accuracy of final work

Deadlines

Each assignment/project has a specific due date that is listed in the assignment instructions/project brief and the course schedule. All requirements for an assignment must be submitted at the beginning of class on the specified due date. This policy applies regardless of the student’s attendance on a specified due date. Late work will be discounted by 50% and will not be accepted if submitted more than one class period after specified due date. In the case of extreme situations (ex: extended serious illness or family tragedy) that impact your performance, please contact the professor immediately so special consideration and assistance may be given.
