The Renaissance in England is just as difficult to define, connected in many ways to the new learning from Italy and the Continent but not developing in terms of painting or the visual arts. The writers of this “Early Modern” period were energized by the expansion of the known world–if not the cosmos–and began to struggle with the responsibilities and challenges of this new knowledge.
