Project 4: Photography as Art

Background

The concept of photography as an art form has promoted continual debate. From the early days of photography’s popularity as a medium, it has been argued by its proponents that a photograph expresses far more than simple information or representation of a literal form.

Brief
Develop a body of artistic photographic work that becomes a representation of your style, your photographic vision – your visual voice. Use conceptual thinking in the creative process, expand your visual vocabulary by experimenting with new techniques and approaches.

Project outcomes/objectives:

The primary intent of this project is to help you refine your skills and use of cameras as an instrument along with an in-depth investigation of various techniques, in order to enhance visual and personal expression.

• Create a cohesive visual language of your work.
• Improve level of communication through a better understanding and application of concepts and photographic principles.

Note: this project can be done with any kind of camera: dslr, smart-phones,  point-and-shoot, scanners, slr, video, etc

Criteria/process

1. Content: choose a concept, genre, or subject-matter
2. Visual language: define what tone or style you’d like to use
3. Image treatment: color, color toning, B&W, etc.
4. Turn in 4-6 final images
5. Size TBD

You will be graded on:

  • The contextual quality of the information you present: content (40%)
  • The technical quality of your images: exposure, focus, composition (30%)
  • The quality which you present this information: cleanness, organization (30%)

Grade Criteria

Subject exploration:     30points
Creativity, concept:           30points
Execution/technique:            20points
Visual/Verbal Presentation:        20points
