Those who control the political atmosphere, control the nation. The Latinx community has been one of the biggest players in the most important political decision in America, the presidential elections. In the most recent election, 66% of voters who identify themselves in the Latinx community voted for the victor of the race. In the 2012 and 2016 elections, the result was the same. The Latinx community has voted for the victor in 75% of the last 4 presidential elections and the trend is around 60% of Latinx votes for the presidential victor in the last 20 years. The Latinx community has bounced back and forth between the Republican and Democratic parties (with the majority falling in the Democratic party). Part of the attempts of the author of Mejorando La Raza was to convince the Latinx community that playing a part in politics can lead to the betterment of their “race” as well as society as a whole.

The leaders of the Latinx communities are the ones that can control how they portray themselves and their “race”. There is a way for leaders of the community to be a “model-minority-government-official”. The low profile of leaders in the community can lead to the Popular Front From Above relating to the Latinx community. The “Popular Front From Above” is an idea that there are political elites who identify positive and negative aspects in Black and Latinx communities that systematically marginalize voters and laborers. To maintain control of the perceptions of their community, the leaders of the Latinx community must be willing to risk total political inefficacy in order to combat the subordination of their community.

Estamos en Los Estados Unidos, Hablamos Ingles acá.

Do you need healthcare services? What race are you? Are you applying for a job? Are you white? The phenomenon of whiteness is a social construction of the past but a reality in the present. The social process that is “whiteness” is not a way of living but rather a way of viewing those around us. We should not be consumed by the origins of those around us. We should be focusing on the actions and beliefs of those around us. The “race card” is simply an admission into American society. We, as a society, depend on “race” as a construction of our processes and quotas. There are requirements for companies to reach appropriate levels of “ethnic diversity”. The “social reality” or race game can be seen in day-to-day happenings in America. The race game is the impact of class, gender, and sexual identities that lead to the decisions of many.

Mejorando La Raza is for the betterment of the Latinx community. Mejorando La Raza is the best response to social and economic discrimination. Mejorando La Raza relies upon a central thought in America: race is not a reflection of socioeconomic hierarchy but a system in and of itself. In order to Mejorar La Raza, we must fight the concept of race and its innate connection to social conflicts and interests of people from different backgrounds. Race as a construct is completely random. What about those who do not classify within the realms of racial groups? What “race” are they? There is no answer. Therefore, whiteness should be viewed as a social construct that can be torn down, not a way of living.

“Thus, the race card is not a game played but an admission ticket to American social intercourse.”

Original Article.

Mejorando La Raza Note: Direct quotes from the original article are italicized.
