{"id":534,"date":"2020-02-07T11:32:43","date_gmt":"2020-02-07T17:32:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/aculibraryacquisitions\/?p=534"},"modified":"2020-02-07T11:34:50","modified_gmt":"2020-02-07T17:34:50","slug":"happy-birthday-charles-dickens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/aculibraryacquisitions\/2020\/02\/07\/happy-birthday-charles-dickens\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy Birthday Charles Dickens!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Charles Dickens, the author of <em>A Christmas Carol\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>David Copperfield,\u00a0<\/em>was born on February 7th, 1812.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_538\" style=\"width: 390px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-538\" class=\"wp-image-538 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/aculibraryacquisitions\/files\/2020\/02\/giphy-5.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"345\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-538\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From America&#8217;s Funniest Home Videos<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Although a bit older than 102\u2014his actual age would be 208\u2014he is still one of the most important literary figures of the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p>He created some of the world&#8217;s best-known characters, Mrs. Havisham, Ebenezar Scrouge, and countless others, and is regarded as one of the greatest novelists of the Victorian Era.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Portsmouth, Dickens ended up leaving school to work in a factory when his father went to debtors&#8217; prison. Despite his lack of formal education, he edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, lectured and performed readings.<\/p>\n<p>His first story\u00a0<em>The Pickwick Papers\u00a0<\/em>was a serial publication in 1836. Within a few years, he had become an international literary celebrity, famous for his humor, satire, and observation on society and character.
