After the Last Borde…
After the Last Border Reading Group
March 1, 2021 11:30 am - 12:30 pm
AC Classroom
The welcoming and acceptance of immigrants and refugees have been central to America's identity for centuries--yet America has periodically turned its back in times of the greatest humanitarian need. After the Last Border is an intimate look at the lives of two women as they struggle for the twenty-first century American dream, having won the "golden ticket" to settle as refugees in Austin, Texas. This moving and informative book situates a dramatic, character-driven story within a larger history--the evolution of modern refugee resettlement in the United States, beginning with World War II and ending with current closed-door policies--revealing not just how America's changing attitudes toward refugees have influenced policies and laws, but also the profound effect on human lives.
Please join us as we explore this inspirational and heartbreaking work by ACU alum Jessica Goudeau.

OER Session
OER Session
March 2, 2021 11:30 am - 12:30 pm
AC Classroom
This meeting will be fully virtual.
Textbook costs have risen dramatically over the years, with an estimated 1000% increase since the 1970s. Rising textbook prices can create significant barriers to students in their abilities to learn and be successful in a course. As faculty, we have an opportunity to offer a solution to this problem. Open educational resources (OER) are resources that are free of cost and access barriers, and legally open for use. The Alternative Textbook Initiative at ACU offers faculty the chance to receive a grant for using OER in their courses, while being supported by resources and staff at the Library. This session will offer deeper insight into the benefits of using OER, as well as more details about the Alternative Textbook Initiative.

This is Definitely a Test: Outcomes, Cheating, and Important Questions to Ask
March 3, 2021 11:30 am - 12:30 pm
We often hear from both students and faculty how frustrating tests can be, especially in Covid Teaching. Any semester, it can be a challenge to decide on the best ways to determine whether students are meeting our goals for the course. In this new series, we'll talk about different approaches to testing and assessment, when we might choose certain tools (like Lockdown Monitor), helping students learn to prepare well, and how to minimize cheating.
This session will specifically focus on tools we might choose for testing and assessment.

Distracted Faculty R…
Distracted Faculty Reading Group
March 4, 2021 11:30 am - 12:30 pm
Adams Center Classroom
Why is it so hard to get students to pay attention? Conventional wisdom blames iPhones, insisting that access to technology has ruined students' ability to focus. The logical response is to ban electronics in class.
But acclaimed educator James M. Lang argues that this solution obscures a deeper problem. In Distracted, Lang rethinks the practice of teaching, revealing how educators can structure their classrooms less as distraction-free zones and more as environments where they can actively cultivate their students' attention.

Zoom Session
The Vice President of Research and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs are hosting a grant writing workshop series during the Spring 2021 semester. Three workshops will be presented, one in February, one in March, and one in April. Workshops will be presented by Barbara Walker (UC Santa Barbara) and Holly Unruh (UC Santa Cruz), authors of "Funding Your Research in the Humanities and Social Sciences." More information about the presenters can be found here. This second session will cover Proposal Writing 101, including finding funding opportunities, interpreting RFPs and determining fit, the agency review process, framing your research questions, and proposal sections and formatting. We are seeking faculty who are motivated to improve their grant-writing skills and pursue external funding for their scholarly activities. These workshops are primarily geared toward faculty in the social sciences and humanities, though any faculty member may benefit from the tips and strategies provided. Please contact orsp@acu.edu if you have questions or to reserve your spot!
