{"id":3438,"date":"2015-01-08T16:46:44","date_gmt":"2015-01-08T21:46:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/?p=3438"},"modified":"2015-01-10T18:23:10","modified_gmt":"2015-01-11T00:23:10","slug":"getting-your-courses-started-in-canvas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/2015\/01\/08\/getting-your-courses-started-in-canvas\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting your courses started in Canvas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For professors participating in the Spring 2015 Canvas pilot, this post is meant to help you get started.<\/p>\n<p>For every course you start in Canvas, you will see \u00a0a checklist like this at the bottom of your course page:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3439\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/files\/2015\/01\/Screen-Shot-2015-01-08-at-3.04.03-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-01-08 at 3.04.03 PM\" width=\"257\" height=\"276\" \/><\/p>\n<p>All of them\u00a0are links. \u00a0Click on any one of them, and Canvas will take you where you need to be to make these changes. \u00a0Or you will be given some instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Let me go over them and add some additional\u00a0instructions or advice. \u00a0I am going to make this a living document to add more content as new situations\/questions arise.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Accessing Canvas:\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nDuring the pilot stage in Spring 2015, Canvas will not show in MyACU. \u00a0 You and your students will access it from this URL:<br \/>\n<a href=\"acu.instructure.com\" target=\"_blank\">acu.instructure.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Import content:<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you have courses in Blackboard\/Coursesites\/Moodle before, you can export them into Canvas directly. \u00a0If you want to migrate your content over from some other platforms, you may need to do so manually.\u00a0 Talk to me (Berlin Fang) or David Christianson \u00a0for advice.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Add course assignments:<\/strong><br \/>\nYou can either add them all at once or add them as the semester goes. \u00a0 If these assignments have due dates, they will also show in your Calendar and Syllabus automatically.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Add students to the course:<\/strong><br \/>\nYou do <strong>NOT<\/strong> need to do this. \u00a0Students have already been imported for you, thanks to Marisa Beard and Lyndell Lee. \u00a0However, you can divide students into groups or sections if\u00a0necessary. \u00a0You can also crosslist courses. \u00a0 We can show you how to do that if you let us know of your needs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Select navigation links:<\/strong><br \/>\nHide things you do not need to show students. \u00a0 Once you have done that these items on the menu will be grayed out, but you can still use them as teachers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Choose a course home page:<\/strong><br \/>\nI strongly recommend you create a simple welcome message to tell students that they are in the right place. \u00a0You can add some simple text, photo, or even a video.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Add course calendar events<\/strong><br \/>\nLike assignments, you do not have to add them all at once. You can add them as you go.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Add TAs to the course<\/strong><br \/>\nYou can add a TA yourself by going to &#8220;people&#8221; to invite someone to be a Teaching Assistant.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Post\u00a0your syllabus:<\/strong><br \/>\nYou can just upload your printable syllabus to &#8220;Syllabus&#8221; in Canvas, or you can re-create a syllabus page, or you can create multiple pages corresponding to various parts of your syllabus to provide some shortcuts to students. \u00a0Upload your printable syllabus (in Word or PDF format, for instance) to &#8220;files&#8221; first, and link it in the &#8220;Syllabus&#8221; area of Canvas. \u00a0This way, you can replace the syllabus in &#8220;files&#8221; after some changes have been made, without having\u00a0to worry about changing the same file in various places\u00a0if you link it elsewhere in the course. \u00a0The same is true with other files.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Publish your course<\/strong><br \/>\nEverything in Canvas (content items, modules, the entire course) starts as being unpublished, you will need to select which ones to publish. \u00a0But eventually you will need to &#8220;publish&#8221; the course for students to see it in their course list.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Send students a welcome message:<\/strong><br \/>\nSend students \u00a0a welcome message telling them that you use Canvas for your course this semester, and give them this URL:<br \/>\nacu.instructure.com<\/p>\n<p>Tell students that\u00a0they should be able to log in with their ACU user name and password. \u00a0 Also provide this link to the Canvas student guides for them to become familiar with Canvas:<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/guides.instructure.com\/m\/8470<br \/>\nYou might want to include this link in your course as well in case students need help.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you have any questions or issues, please feel free to let us know.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For professors participating in the Spring 2015 Canvas pilot, this post is meant to help you get started.
