{"id":3511,"date":"2015-01-28T09:00:24","date_gmt":"2015-01-28T15:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/?p=3511"},"modified":"2020-07-06T10:55:50","modified_gmt":"2020-07-06T15:55:50","slug":"content-page-file-or-external-url-choosing-canvas-content-types","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/2015\/01\/28\/content-page-file-or-external-url-choosing-canvas-content-types\/","title":{"rendered":"Content Page, File, or External URL: Choosing Canvas Content Types"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you add a content or activity item to Canvas, \u00a0you can choose from the following list:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/files\/2015\/01\/Canvas_content_dropdown.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3514\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/files\/2015\/01\/Canvas_content_dropdown.png\" alt=\"Content Dropdown menu\" width=\"223\" height=\"162\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many content artifacts can be posted through a variety of tools, but it is important to use the right type of item for your content as students may set up their notification to get alerts\u00a0only when certain types of content are added. \u00a0The course analytics are also largely based on the types of content being published.<\/p>\n<p>Some of these tools, such as quiz, assignment and discussion, require student action. \u00a0 These tools are self-explanatory in their names. \u00a0You probably will not mistake one for another for these tools.<\/p>\n<p>I am going to focus on content types\u00a0that require mostly viewing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Content page:<\/strong> \u00a0Content page is a web page that students can click and it will show the content immediately. \u00a0Use this to post short text such as your module instructions. \u00a0You can also use content pages to compose a fairly complex web page with links, tables and embedded media. \u00a0This is a very versatile tool, allowing you to display many types of content.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/files\/2015\/01\/Content_page.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3515\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/files\/2015\/01\/Content_page.png\" alt=\"Content_page\" width=\"764\" height=\"355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/files\/2015\/01\/Content_page.png 764w, https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/files\/2015\/01\/Content_page-300x139.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 764px) 100vw, 764px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>File:<\/strong> This refers to an attachment you would like students to see. \u00a0Usually it is a longer piece of document that does not easily display on one screen. \u00a0 It could be a PDF file, Word or PowerPoint file. \u00a0 It will display in Canvas after it finishes the loading process, but usually one page at a time. \u00a0 You will see arrows on the bottom that you can use to move up\u00a0or down.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/files\/2015\/01\/file.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3518\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/files\/2015\/01\/file-1024x449.png\" alt=\"File\" width=\"1024\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/files\/2015\/01\/file-1024x449.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/files\/2015\/01\/file-300x131.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/files\/2015\/01\/file.png 1082w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Text header:<\/strong> \u00a0If you just want some kind of &#8220;divider&#8221; in a module without any real content in it, I&#8217;d recommend you use &#8220;text header&#8221;. \u00a0 It is not going to open when you click on it. \u00a0See the screenshot below. \u00a0&#8220;Additional resources&#8221; is a text header.<\/li>\n<li><strong>External URL:<\/strong> \u00a0If you just want to link to an external web page, choose\u00a0external URL. \u00a0Due to security setting restrictions, some pages does not open within Canvas, so it is a good idea to check\u00a0the box beside &#8220;load in a new tab.&#8221;
