Online teaching is being seen as a \u201cdisruptive innovation\u201d for higher education\u00a0<\/span>with the potential\u00a0for changing the ways students learn (Read this\u00a0New York Times article<\/a>\u00a0for more information). On many campuses, online teaching is a regular alternative to face-to-face teaching. We invite you to join the Spring 2016 Adams Center certificate program for online teaching.<\/p>\n

These sessions will be held around twice a month during the lunch hours (11:30am -1:00pm). During each session participants will develop, as a community, conceptual understanding about best practices in various aspects of online teaching. Each session will also include hands-on activities for participants to finish developing at least one sample module. If you do not intend to teach an online course, you may also find such sessions useful if you incorporate online components into your regular face-to-face, blended or flipped classes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The sessions will include the following topics and activities:<\/p>\n

Module 1:\u00a0Getting ready to teach online, Monday, Jan 25, 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n

In this session, we are going to examine the benefits of online teaching, what quality looks like, what others have done and what the next steps will be. The end products for this session include: \u00a0a\u00a0course shell to work in and a\u00a0plan for building the course.<\/p>\n

Module 2:\u00a0Creating Online Content, Thursday, Feb 18, 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n

In this session, we are going to brainstorm ways to \u201ctranslate\u201d face-to-face teaching into online formats, including different types of content and design principles for delivering content. We would expect you to develop sample content for one module.<\/p>\n

Module 3:\u00a0Assessing Learning in An Online Setting, Thursday,\u00a0March 3, 2016<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

In this session, we are going to explore ways to assess learning online, including traditional assessment strategies and alternative online assessment methods. \u00a0For this session we would expect you to develop, for at least a sample module, o<\/span>nline tests,\u00a0\u00a0assignments and\u00a0other activities for assessing students<\/p>\n

Module 4:Facilitating Online Interaction, Thursday, March 24, 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n

In this session, we are going to explore ways to promote teacher-student, student-student and student-text interaction in an online setting. \u00a0 We expect you to develop your strategy to create \u201cpresence\u201d in your online class, space for interaction, and discussion forums, sample questions & grading rubrics.<\/p>\n

Module 5:\u00a0Using Media in Online Teaching, Thursday,\u00a0<\/strong>April 7, 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n

In this session, we are going to show ways to build and manage media components in teaching, including audio, video and screencasting components that an effective online course should include. We would expect you to select\u00a0m<\/span><\/span>edia format to be used, download screencasting applications, and create sample screencast \/ video \/ audio segments for your course.<\/p>\n

Module 6:\u00a0The Talent Show, Monday, April 18, 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n

In this session, participants will each spend a few minutes demonstrating their online courses for peers to learn from.<\/p>\n
