{"id":4523,"date":"2017-02-28T09:20:46","date_gmt":"2017-02-28T15:20:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/?p=4523"},"modified":"2020-06-25T14:34:40","modified_gmt":"2020-06-25T19:34:40","slug":"making-your-classroom-hospitable-for-international-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/2017\/02\/28\/making-your-classroom-hospitable-for-international-students\/","title":{"rendered":"A Hospitable Classroom for International Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4525\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/files\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-27-at-4.24.53-PM-300x194.png\" alt=\"International Students\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/files\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-27-at-4.24.53-PM-300x194.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/files\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-27-at-4.24.53-PM-768x497.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/files\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-27-at-4.24.53-PM-1024x662.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/files\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-27-at-4.24.53-PM.png 1404w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In a recent Adams Center session on making classrooms welcoming places for international students, Lucy Dawson from the Center for International Education, Dr. Carly Dodd (Professor of Communication), Dr. Monty Lynn (Professor of Management) and Dr. Lori Houghtalen, Assistant Professor of Engineering and Physics) and Berlin Fang shared some challenges faced by international students studying at ACU, as well as possible solutions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We have found that these are the top four challenges international students face. \u00a0We will also share a few strategies to help address these challenges:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Learner participation in the classroom: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0International students may have difficulty participating in classroom discussions due to language barriers, varied cultural expectations, limited understanding of social norms and lack of prior exposure to group discussions. \u00a0Group projects was also mentioned as particularly challenging for international students, perhaps due to the lack of welcome by domestic students and a hesitation to contribute by international students.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Academic integrity: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some international students may have limited understanding of how their professors define academic integrity. Sometimes they lack training in proper citations in academic work. \u00a0There is also a concern that some students do not know the boundary between individual work and group work. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Expectations for assignments and assessment: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Among international students, there is often confusion on the number of assignments, and confusion about some academic jargon such as \u201coutcomes\u201d and \u201crubrics\u201d. \u00a0Some show frustration over the speed of professors&#8217; speech or the volume of assigned reading. \u00a0Participants mentioned international students had not been taught how to \u201cscan\u201d readings, and perhaps had vocabulary to look up, which also impeded reading speed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>The use of resources:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> There is a lack of awareness of university resources that could be really helpful for international students. \u00a0Among these are the Writing Center, the Speaking Center, research help, and the Counseling Center. \u00a0Tutoring is provided to students who may be struggling with an academic subject, but sometimes there is variation between tutor knowledge and the faculty\u2019s lecture.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The panelists discussed many solutions, best practices, and tips for faculty to make their classroom more hospitable to international students. \u00a0Here are some highlights from this discussion:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Use technology to break barriers: \u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As some international students have a greater ability to read and write, than to listen and speak, including some discussions online may help relieve the pressure to speak in public in a different language. Some materials, such as the course rubric and reading materials should be shared online as well for constant access.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Develop a relationship with the students outside of class, and use office hours creatively: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ACU faculty use many types of \u201coffice hours\u201d techniques to build one-on-one relationship with students, which can be especially helpful for students. One professor mandates a 10-minute meeting with every student to get to know them. Some use walking sessions to have a \u201cmobile\u201d office hour around campus. Some have designated a \u201chelp desk\u201d at the library to meet with students in a less threatening environment. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Consider offering a specialized orientation for your class. \u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For instance, provide some training related to reading academic resources (reading strategies).
