{"id":9978,"date":"2023-11-30T09:14:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-30T15:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/?p=9978"},"modified":"2023-11-30T17:24:40","modified_gmt":"2023-11-30T23:24:40","slug":"honors-colloquia-and-honors-contracts-fall-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/adamscenter\/2023\/11\/30\/honors-colloquia-and-honors-contracts-fall-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Honors Colloquia and Honors Contracts: Fall 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Trey Shirley provided information about applying for and developing an Honors Colloquium. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1O0uwEBwrkGukVN5dM9HPQyN-eeM1KIEOw5H9hOPa3cc\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These slides<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> detail the new tracks for the Honors College and the process for creating a colloquium. For the 2024-2025 school year, applications are due January 12, 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition to a conversation about colloquia, a panel of faculty shared about their success in creating Honors Contracts with honors students in order for the student to receive honors credit in a non-honors section. A few tips and ideas offered by the panelists are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The faculty can mentor an honors student through a process of shadowing a professional in a potential field of interest. Following this process, the student submits a short reflection and analysis paper.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Invite the honors student to look through the syllabus to find either an area of interest or an area the class does not cover, but that the student is curious about. Then guide the student to create a plan for learning about the topic, creating an artifact of their learning, and presenting it to the class.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If your department includes graduate students or research opportunities, utilize these as a launching point for an honors contract.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Create an experiential learning opportunity that matches the course content.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use a general template that guides any honors student\u2019s choice as they consider what they would want to complete for an honors contract.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Implement boundaries for yourself (the professor) on what is reasonable for you to accept for honors contracts. Some of the specific boundaries mentioned were:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Limiting the number of contracts you will mentor per semester<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Limiting contracts to majors classes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Putting the burden of meeting with the faculty mentor on the student<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Verbalizing the consequences if a student does not complete items on the contract.
