Departmental Requirements
In addition to the criteria and examples provided in the Guidelines, the Department of Art & Design adds the following: Examples of service in any of these areas could include, but are not limited to:
1. Internal Service
- organization, leadership and/or participation in art chapel
- organization, leadership and/or participation in art Bible studies
- maintaining, repairing, cleaning equipment used in art production
- locating, ordering, and accounting for classroom supplies and tools
- departmental assignments and responsibilities; slides, recruiting, art chapel, chairmanship, equipment maintenance, clean up, library liaison, supply ordering, organizing departmental reviews, gallery coordinator
- department, college, and university committees, including chairing them
2. External Service:
- advising and/or consulting with non-profits, including churches
- service with churches
- committee membership on arts committees and associations, including board memberships
- local talks and presentations for non-profits, including schools and civic groups
- judging; UIL, PIA, and private school competitions
- offices in state, regional and national organizations
- planning and logistics for art trips
- teaching support for other academic programs, like the honors program through art related special lectures and colloquiums
I. INTERNAL SERVICE
Internal Service Activities
Assistant Chair, Department of Art and Design, Abilene Christian University // 2019-2022
As assistant chair, I oversaw our departmental outcomes, directed capital funds, organized chapel and departmental events, managed student and faculty concerns, and served as the departmental library liaison. One of my biggest accomplishments was the collection and creation of the department Program Review document.
Interim Chair, Department of Art and Design, Abilene Christian University // Fall 2021
In the fall of 2021, I was asked to serve as the Interim Chair during Mike Wiggins’s sabbatical. In this role, I oversaw department planning, scheduled events, managed the departmental budget, oversaw departmental meetings, and addressed issues of student and faculty conflict.
Capital Funds Committee, Abilene Christian University // 2017-2022
In this role, I helped collect information on important capital funds needs, researched and documented what was needed to be purchased, filed department capital funds requests, and oversaw the installation and assembly of tools and materials for the department and our classrooms.
Art and Design Department Library Liaison, Abilene Christian University // 2016-2020
For four years I met with faculty and our department librarian to ensure that the library had all of the written digital and physical resources our students need for research and study.
Art and Design Department Newsletter, Abilene Christian University // 2018-2022
Our department has a major newsletter that we send out three to four times a year. Throughout the years, I have interviewed alumni, pitched stories, written features, and served once as the editor.
Senior Blessing Committee, Abilene Christian University // 2017-22
This committee was tasked with overseeing the scheduling, presentation, and blessing for our senior send off dinner.
Foundations Keystone Project Committee, Abilene Christian University // 2013-14
This committee collected sample assignments for our Keystone Projects and wrote new learning objectives to bring the assignment in line with our department Continuous Improvement Plan.

My family has attended Highland Church of Christ since 2013, where we are active members. My wife and I have co-led a small group at the church since 2014 and are members of the Sojourners Bible class, taught by Richard Beck, Vic McCracken, Brad East, and Molly Spaulding. In 2018, we led a Wednesday night Bible Class on the book Tech-Wise Family. Starting in 2022, we became Huddle leaders and are working with the sixth grade students (class of 2029) on Wednesday nights. I have also volunteered for a number of service activities, including leading service projects to help people with challenging home repairs.
Community
National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature (NCCIL), Board Member // 2018-Present
Since 2018, I have served on the board of the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature (NCCIL). The NCCIL is a non-profit organization that aims to inspire a love of art and reading in children through the celebration and promotion of the world’s best children’s literature illustrations. As a board member, I have played an integral role in supporting the organization’s mission. Currently (2023), I serve as the secretary and am on the executive board. I have also worked on marketing materials to promote NCCIL events, helping to increase awareness and participation in the organization’s activities.
