Writing goals and reflecting on them annually with my department chair is a useful exercise. It is good for me to sit down once a year and think about things that I want to accomplish in the next year. One thing that I notice when looking over the goals is that often opportunities arise during the year that I had not anticipated. This particularly shows itself in service, but is seen in other areas too. In teaching and service, I am able to meet all of my goals. In scholarship this is not always the case. It is generally not from a lack of effort, but from the science not working like I would hope. Sometimes experiments that we expect to work just do not. I also often had writing in my scholarship goals. It seemed to often take me a year longer than I would have liked to get papers finished. This I believe is due to being easily distracted by other areas of my job that I enjoy more. But the value of having goals is that I was reminded that I needed to keep working on them. This helped me eventually publish my papers that are a required by my department for applying for full professor.<\/p>\n
The Annual Faculty Evaluations<\/strong><\/p>\n In the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Faculty Evaluations are done by calendar year. The dates on the following evaluations reflect the calendar year for the goals. The evaluations were performed the following year.
