In addition to learning the concepts required for the course, it also develops critical thinking and team work skills that are required in today’s workforce. Dr. Cynthia Powell began implementing this technique in the General Chemistry labs several years ago. After learning about how to use POGIL at this conference, I began using the technique five to six times a semester in Biochemistry I.

Biennial Conference on Chemical Education (BCCE), 2010 and 2012

I attended BCCE in 2010 and 2012 to present my education research. More importantly, at these conference I was able to attend sessions that gave me ideas to improve my teaching. Some of the techniques I learned about at these conferences include using an electronic laboratory notebook that we now use in the Biochemistry Labs, more POGIL techniques, and DIY quizzes that I used in Consumer Chemistry.

In addition to attending occasional Adams Center sessions in which I have learned about new technologies, I have been able to attend a few events to learn about the latest in chemical education.
