{"id":7001,"date":"2022-11-02T09:00:47","date_gmt":"2022-11-02T14:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/coba\/?p=7001"},"modified":"2022-11-04T10:44:01","modified_gmt":"2022-11-04T15:44:01","slug":"compass-helping-students-navigate-holistic-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/coba\/2022\/11\/02\/compass-helping-students-navigate-holistic-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Compass: Helping Students Navigate Holistic Development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Written by special contributor Lance Fleming<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It only takes a few seconds of studying the mission of ACU\u2019s College of Business Administration (COBA) to discern that the holistic development of its students is as important as anything else that goes on in the Mabee Business Building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6914\" style=\"width: 249px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6914\" class=\"wp-image-6914 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/coba\/files\/2022\/07\/COBA-in-Montevideo-Buenos-Aires-239x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6914\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Andy Little and students during their Study Abroad trip to Montevideo last summer.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first point of the mission statement is \u201cholistic student learning and development.\u201d That part of the mission goes on to say that ACU \u201cseeks <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">spiritual, academic, and professional growth over the life of each student through exemplary teaching, experiential learning, and relationships with Christian faculty, professional staff, and engaged alumni.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s all part of equipping the next generation of global leaders with all the tools necessary to be successful in their homes, in their places of worship, in their communities, and in their places of work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While great teaching is essential to what we do, we want to emphasize how our students learn and develop both inside and outside the classroom,\u201d said Dr. Brad Crisp, Dean of the College of Business Administration. \u201cThat is why we are partnering with the university in the design and implementation of the Compass initiative.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Compass initiative begins with a customized roadmap showing the key experiences the student can choose during their time at ACU. Then, they can utilize the Compass app or website to gain access to badges and activities that they can pursue at the appropriate times during their journey. The student will also have a record of their co-curricular experiences during their time at ACU and within COBA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Crisp and Derran Reese \u2013 Director of Experiential Learning \u2013 presented this initiative at the Suitable conference<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7008 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/coba\/files\/2022\/11\/Abilene-Christian-University-Highest-Engagement-Percentage-150x116.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"116\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7009 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/coba\/files\/2022\/11\/Abilene-Christian-University-Distinguished-Program-150x116.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"116\" \/> last summer in Philadelphia where ACU Compass won two awards: Highest Student Engagement (91% engagement rate) and The Distinguished Program Award. Suitable provides the technology platform supporting the Compass initiative. Reese said Compass was designed to help students engage in various activities and experiences that help them grow in various ways: intellectually, spiritually, professionally, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe must think about creating an integrated student experience,\u201d Reese said. \u201cDesigning curricular and co-curricular activities should be intentional, and we need to communicate to students that these activities all contribute to their holistic development. That is why we designed Compass.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7002\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7002\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7002\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/coba\/files\/2022\/11\/IMG_2853-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7002\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leadership Summit 2020 attendees (a program of the Lytle Center for Faith and Leadership).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Compass, however, is about more than the teaching that goes on in the classroom. It is about merging different experiences into the classroom, engaging students in projects and internships, and providing opportunities for them to lead in student organizations, etc. It&#8217;s about bringing in speakers and employers, going on Study Abroad trips, and participating in the Griggs Center or Lytle Center. It\u2019s not just what is done inside the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe have a BBA badge for our pre-business students and are working on reformatting the professional development badge and including a Lytle Center badge,\u201d said M.C. Jennings, Student Engagement and Marketing Manager for COBA. \u201cWe want students to be able to keep track of all of their accomplishments and have a portfolio that they will be able to share with future employers that show all of the things they were involved in (Study Abroad, speakers, special projects), holds their resume and cover letter, has academic accomplishments, etc. Eventually, we hope to have more class assignments tied to Compass through Canvas. This is a tool that will enable students to track their academic, professional, personal, and spiritual growth throughout their time at ACU.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And all of this is part of the holistic learning environment being fostered in COBA, an environment that is necessary for students preparing to enter the world away from ACU.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7003\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7003\" class=\"wp-image-7003 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/coba\/files\/2022\/11\/IMG_4073-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7003\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Matt Deeg takes students out of the regular classroom to learn about HR in a more interactive setting.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Excellence is demanded of our graduates upon graduation,\u201d said Tim Johnston, Assistant Dean of COBA. \u201cProfessors have the tough task of teaching to a high standard and evaluating a student&#8217;s ability to complete the assignments to standard. At ACU, our class size and Christian mission make the learning experience very personal. Striking the balance between objective assessment and personal care for an individual student is complex. Our professional development program and alumni connections help support the need for a student to achieve learning excellence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But, Reese said, that learning excellence must now include many different facets than might have been required even as few as five years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cToday <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">education is more holistic, a<\/span>nd the responsibility of a university \u2013 particularly a Christian university \u2013 is to help form the whole student. That means that curriculum and pedagogy matter, and additional equipping of students with professional and life skills is vital.
