{"id":7208,"date":"2024-02-21T09:04:41","date_gmt":"2024-02-21T15:04:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/coba\/?p=7208"},"modified":"2024-02-21T09:04:41","modified_gmt":"2024-02-21T15:04:41","slug":"how-the-abilene-hat-company-was-born","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/coba\/2024\/02\/21\/how-the-abilene-hat-company-was-born\/","title":{"rendered":"How the Abilene Hat Company was Born"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7211\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/coba\/files\/2024\/02\/IMG_5740-225x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/>Long before Holden Rook and Brooks Gay were assigned a project in their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">entrepreneurship class requiring them to start a business, the roommates had already discussed starting their own venture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So when the class project met reality, they already had their plan ready.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rook \u2013 a sophomore marketing major from The Woodlands \u2013 said the class brainstormed for \u201cabout 2-3 weeks\u201d and then had to pitch the idea to Dr. Jim Litton, associate professor of Management Sciences and Director of the Griggs Center for Entrepreneurship &amp; Philanthropy, who was teaching the entrepreneurship class.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBrooks and I had expressed an interest in doing something before the class had even started, but it was Brooks who kick-started the idea in class,\u201d Rook said. \u201cBrooks was the brains behind the start of it since he\u2019s from Abilene and knew the ins and outs of how to get our business started here locally.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And that\u2019s how<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abilenehatco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Abilene Hat Company<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was born.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gay \u2013 a junior business management major <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">from Abilene \u2013 is a former baseball player at Abilene Wylie High School and last season at ACU, who had the original idea for a hat company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI wanted to create a hat company that represents Abilene and the surrounding areas because of the<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7210\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/coba\/files\/2024\/02\/IMG_1263-225x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/> number of people who wear hats and how much pride people have in being from this area,\u201d Gay said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After making their pitch to Litton, getting approval, putting together a team, and dividing up responsibilities, the team \u2013 consisting of Gay, Rooks, ACU volleyball player Ashli Edmiston, Reece Westby, and Nick Schott \u2013 met about logistics and designs and began the process of giving life to the company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOur goal was to, first, make a good grade in the class,\u201d Gay said. \u201cWe talked about our vision, bounced ideas off each other, and set our goals higher. We wanted to create the most revenue and profit in the current class and break the current record for revenue and profit ever in that class. We broke the current records and created the most revenue to date.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The team is now just Gay and Rook, and they have moved the business forward to the point that they have a sales point online and in a storefront at Covey Apparel in Terrell, Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOur short-range goal was to find some local businesses willing to support another small business and give us a chance to get into their stores,\u201d Rook said. \u201cThe long-term goal is to expand into all of West Texas to allow many people to see our brand.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7212 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/coba\/files\/2024\/02\/IMG_4688-300x240.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/>The company\u2019s most popular hat logo is a patch on a rope cap with the words \u201cWest Texas\u201d atop a pump jack, an iconic symbol of one of the lifebloods of West Texas life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOne of our long-term goals is to create different pieces of apparel with similar ideas and designs,\u201d Gay said. \u201cI want to represent where we are from, the pride the people of West Texas have by capturing those feelings and displaying them on a high-quality product. I believe the patch design with the oil rig does the best job of capturing the spirit of the hard-working people of West Texas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gay and Rook said their COBA classes have given them insight into so many different aspects of running a business, from the entrepreneurial mindset to all the areas of running a company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe most beneficial things I\u2019ve learned have been small pieces from numerous classes,\u201d Gay said. \u201cWe use Excel to keep our books, we use marketing strategies in our social media, and many other entrepreneurship techniques from the classes I have taken.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rook echoed some of that when describing what he\u2019s learned inside the walls of the Mabee Business Building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cDefinitely learned more about the entrepreneurial mindset,\u201d Rook said. \u201cYou must be ready to adapt to the market and whatever it\u2019s feeding you to succeed. Everything is always changing, and you must be ready to change.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While Rook said the next stop is continued growth and perhaps adding additional employees, Gay said he<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7214\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/coba\/files\/2024\/02\/IMG_4295-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/> wants to expand the business into collegiate athletics, where Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) now allows student-athletes to promote products in exchange for money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThat would <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">not only be mutually beneficial for us and the student-athlete but will also significantly push our brand,\u201d Gay said. \u201cThe athletes we are connected with at large schools have significant social media presence and will grow our total audience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To learn more about entrepreneurship at ACU, click <a href=\"https:\/\/acu.edu\/academics\/business-administration\/griggs-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Long before Holden Rook and Brooks Gay were assigned a project in their entrepreneurship class requiring them to start a business, the roommates had already discussed starting their own venture.
