JMC 201 Introduction to Visual Communication, Skills in Microsoft Word and Photoshop
Nature of the Course
The course is based on three hours of classroom and three hours of advanced lab work each week. Three hours of advanced lab will consist of several design projects that will emphasize communication through non-verbal means. The major project will be the planning and design of a magazine prototype.
Purpose of Course
- Develop a basic understanding of the relationships between content judgment and design.
- Develop the ability to graphically communicate information accurately, interestingly and orderly.
- Interlace universal principles of design and contemporary publication design trends.
Anticipated Outcomes
Each student will be expected to achieve competency in these specific skills:
- Application of universal design principles.
- Knowledge of races, families, faces.
- Non-verbal meaning of type.
- Correct specification of type.
- White space usage.
- Spatial control.
- Function and form development.
- Pagination of a multi-page publication.
- Step-by-step flow in design, production.
- Hard-copy publication dummy creation.
- InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator usage.
- Application of design principles to interactive publication
