Inference is a step we make in our minds based on input received from our senses:\u00a0 the police car with flashing lights behind me wants me to pull over.\u00a0 Assumptions are presumptions we make based on experiences in the past.\u00a0 Because we have experience with them, assumptions are often believed to be true, even though they may not be justified:\u00a0 I believe police cars use flashing lights to get drivers’ attention.<\/p>\n
Distinguishing between inference and assumption is sometimes difficult to do, but it’s an important first step in the process of critical thinking.\u00a0 This short article on inference vs. assumption<\/a> is written by the same authors that wrote the Guide to Critical Thinking<\/em>.\u00a0 As you read, consider the examples they chose (walking around a big city and seeing someone lying in a gutter).\u00a0 Then construct a three-part example of your own, taking into account:<\/p>\n Come up with two good examples to share with your class.\u00a0 Consider also whether or not you are justified in your assumption and what evidence it would take to change your assumption.<\/p>\n We welcome comments on this or other related topics on the main Spotlight page.<\/p>\n\n
