In his talk, Dr. Rankin outlined two different ways people use technology: competitively and collaboratively.
- What are some current examples you see of each of these models? What do you see as short-sighted or biased in Rankin’s presentation–where does he need to be more practical?
- What troubles or convinces you about what he presented? Why?
- What are the limitations of the models he proposes–for example, do you see one model as applying more in some fields or being more irrelevant in others?
- Do you see other options not described in Rankin’s models? What does he need to nuance or change?
Dr. Rankin suggested that while we often speak of seeking a single “Truth,” there are also “truths” that are more local and that we can participate in making or establishing.
- What do you think of this perspective? Do you agree or disagree? Why?
- What challenges or comforts you about this model? Are there limits to such a model, or is all truth “local”?
- How does Dr. Rankin’s presentation concerning truth connect or contrast with some of the other spotlight speakers we’ve heard this semester?
- How would you suggest responding to the differences between Dr. Rankin’s presentation and those made by other speakers?
