1) Dr. Rankin spoke of the “responsibility” we have to use technology wisely and appropriately. At the most basic level, this involves an awareness of the impact that technology can have and of the power that it offers to us. While he spoke largely of what we create with technology, this also applies to our most basic uses of it.

  • As a class, develop a “responsible use” policy for how students and faculty ought to use technology at ACU. What principles should guide decisions to make such a policy? What specific details about technology use should be included? What is ACU doing now regarding technology that needs to be changed, or what is it not doing that needs to be addressed?

2) As a thought experiment, propose one way you might use the collaborative model to use technology to accomplish something at ACU–in your major, in the spiritual life of ACU, in a club or organization, or in a project. What difference would collaborating with others make in this particular area or activity? How would the technology enable such collaboration? What challenges or drawbacks would using the technology pose? What would be required actually to implement your plan in technical, community, and financial terms? How do you think people would respond to such a plan?

3) Dr. Rankin suggested that the collaborative model could be closely associated with some of the perspectives and values shared by people of faith, yet many people of faith see technology as an isolating factor that destroys true relationships.

  • Respond to this issue by choosing a position and creating an artifact–a paper, sculpture, image, or performance–that illustrates your view. What factors regarding technology did you have to consider as you created your artifact? How does your stance on technology affect the way you created your artifact, as well as to how you communicate or share it?
