Follow Me to Freedom

The book chosen for the 2010 Freshman Common Reading is Follow Me to Freedom: Leading and Following as an Ordinary Radical. The book is a conversation between co-authors Shane Claiborne, a 30 something, and Dr. John Perkins, who is in his eighties. This unlikely duo relate stories that are aimed at “the young who see great visions and the old who dream new dreams” in a world hungry for hope.

Video from the 10:00 Spotlight session includes the Q&A with Dr. Kristina Campos. If you weren’t at both sessions, hear Dr. Perkins responses to student questions in the afternoon session as well:

  1. Our generation has a purpose to change the world ..i remember my mother and father telling me that we are to be 100 times better than our father and mother …so how do we accomplish that following our dreams , reading and studying the word ..and also our parents have to tame us structure us and help build us build our foundation to become great leaders and representatives of christ

  2. i like the answer he gave concerning the war, yes war is wrong, but even in the bible there was war when it was necessary. what captured my attention the most is when he said i don’t follow God because he promised me riches ( my interpretation) it reminds me allot about my self, a situation occured in my life that was similar to this, but it didnt change my approach towards God, i still felt distant from him and i did not act to get closer to him because of the promise. what makes me move towards God is like as he said,” when we see others in pain thats when the passion grow”, i feel the need of Gods hand in peoples lives, and i know that the only way some people can make it out of a situation is through God, and because i have a passion to help others in christ, it helps me with my relationship with God. i believe that that is also a form of leadership, when i see someone in pain i have to help them (lead them) out of it. i believe everyone is a leader, wether it is taking care of your children or leading someone at work, it is still a form of leadership. He also mentioned that we are blessed, because we have the opportunity to be friends with different races, and we can study and learn together. i know that there was also a form of leadership, because people had to take care of their kids, some people had to be in charge of slaves, some people had to teach each other also. i believe there is leadership in ever thing we do, if you come to think about it.

  3. The things that Mr Perkins speaks about has a lot of truth to it. I would have liked to seen him in person rather than the like on the net. I think I would have gotten more out of it. All thou he made very good points about the leadership and politics of the nation.
