In the opening moments of Monday’s Spotlight Presentation, Dr. Stephen Johnson invited us to hear Bluegrass music and reflect on the significance of music. The origins of Bluegrass music are found in Appalachian Immigrant people. To begin, spend a little time thinking about this part of the southern United States.

ACT ONE
Dr. Johnson suggested that the Missional Impulse begins with the incarnation of God in Jesus – that God sent Jesus into the world to give his life for the sake of the world – and that we understand our identity and vocation as Christians as ones sent into the world for the sake of the world. He suggested that the “world” is not just all the people on the planet, but particular people and places. Missional Impulse 1: Incarnation – Sent Into the World for the Sake of the World.
- Discuss how one would give one’s life for the sake of the world in a particular people and place.
- Discuss how this requires a particular way of knowing that is integrative. For instance, how Dr. Johnson described Blue Grass Music, the Appalachian Mountains, and immigrant people by integrating history, geology, folk music, ethnography, and theology.
