In his Spotlight talk Dr. Beck talked about how magical and irrational thinking can cause us to behave in ways that are unchristian and dysfunctional. Dr. Beck illustrated this by discussing how disgust psychology can affect the way we think about sin and sinners.
But that’s not the only example of irrationality we might consider. Consider this article about the irrationality associated with the recent financial crisis in America.
Discussion Questions:
- The world seems full of humans making irrational decisions, from how we think about sin to how we think about money. Can you think of any other examples of irrationality creating problems, big or small, in the world today? Do you see any of this irrationality in how you make decisions?
- How would an ACU education look if we were trying to get our graduates to notice and overcome irrationality in their own lives? What sorts of classes, experiences or skills would you need to become a more thoughtful and critical thinker?
