In the various disciplines in the humanities, thinkers analyze “texts” of all kinds in their quest to understand the express the complexities of human experience. These texts include novels, essays, and histories, but they also include, to name a few, films and songs and paintings. Even if you aren’t a trained philosopher or literary critic, you have surely encountered “texts” that you feel best capture the human condition.
What are they? Which books, movies, songs, or other works of art do you think accurately and powerfully describe the stuff of human experience: love, death, suffering, joy, etc? Use a mobile app like “Picstitch” to create a collage of images that refer the “texts” you’ve found most meaningful. Then, share the collage with your friends. Can they identify the books, artists, or films that you included? Do they have some of the same “texts” in their collages? Be prepared to explain why you included a certain “text” in your own collage!
