{"id":1898,"date":"2011-09-27T14:16:23","date_gmt":"2011-09-27T19:16:23","guid":{"rendered":"In her Spotlight presentation Monday, September 26, Dr. Sutherlin referenced a discovery made by scientists in Italy that neutrinos (sub atomic particles that are found throughout the universe) fired at a receptor 500 miles away arrived 60 nanoseconds ear"},"modified":"2011-09-30T06:45:24","modified_gmt":"2011-09-30T11:45:24","slug":"implications-of-fast-neutrinos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/cornerstonef13\/2011\/09\/27\/implications-of-fast-neutrinos\/","title":{"rendered":"Implications of Fast Neutrinos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In her Spotlight presentation Monday, September 26, Dr. Sutherlin referenced a discovery made by scientists in Italy that neutrinos (sub atomic particles that are found throughout the universe) fired at a receptor 500 miles away arrived 60 nanoseconds earlier than light would have.\u00a0 Here is an excerpt of an article from Reuters News Service that explains the discovery (the full article is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2011\/09\/22\/us-science-light-idUSTRE78L4FH20110922\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A total of 15,000 beams of neutrinos &#8212; tiny particles that pervade the cosmos &#8212; were fired over a period of 3 years from CERN toward Gran Sasso 730 (500 miles) km away, where they were picked up by giant detectors.<\/p>\n<p>Light would have covered the distance in around 2.4 thousandths of a second, but the neutrinos took 60 nanoseconds &#8212; or 60 billionths of a second &#8212; less than light beams would have taken.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a tiny difference,&#8221; said Ereditato, who also works at Berne University in Switzerland, &#8220;but conceptually it is incredibly important.
