When I began my research into London\u2019s literary landscapes in graduate school, the images that first excited my curiosity were the 16th and 17th century panoramas of the city by immigrants like Claes Visscher and Wenceslaus Hollar. Like me, they were not natives of the capital but had been drawn to London with artists and scholars from Erasmus and Holbein to Van Dyck and Handel by a sense of the energy and possibility of the great city.<\/p>\n

J. K. Rowling echoes this centuries-old excitement when Harry Potter first steps into Diagon Alley:<\/p>\n

Harry wished he had about eight more eyes. He turned his head in every direction as they walked up the street, trying to look at everything at once: the shops, the things outside them, the people doing their shopping . . . windows stacked with barrels of bat spleens and eels\u2019 eyes, tottering piles of spell books, quills, and rolls of parchment, potion bottles, globes of the moon.<\/em><\/p>\n

After a life spent surveying the capital\u2019s many streets and shops, its distinct characters and moods, Doctor Johnson could still declare, \u201cWhen a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.\u201d<\/p>\n

I must confess something of the same confused excitement in my first years teaching at ACU. As I\u2019ve worked with friends and colleagues from across campus on curriculum development and service committees, I continue to be astonished by how the university has grown over its first century and the promise and possibility it exhibits upon entering its second.<\/p>\n

As you review the following portfolio, I hope it offers, in terms of a Renaissance engraver or cartographer, a bird\u2019s-eye-view of bright vistas rather than a belabored plan\u2014both detailed and dull\u2014of every street and byway. My path through these years has never been direct or carefully plotted, but I hope the broad outlines become clear in the following pages.<\/p>\n

Ernest Boyer in his 1990 Scholarship Reconsidered argued for a broader, more holistic vision of the work of the scholar, uniting independent research and engagement with the broader world. In the teaching portfolio that follows, I envision a similar integration. Scholarship, service, and collegiality are not seen as independent of teaching, any more than Charing Cross or Covent Garden would be distinguished from London proper. I hope you\u2019ll see some of the vital connections between these areas that continue to energize my teaching.<\/p>\n

After eight years teaching at ACU, I\u2019m just beginning to feel like a native. The prospect of my future work here and its relation to the whole is beginning to come into focus. The possibility of future collaborations on projects from the new Gen Ed curriculum to iTunes U integration promises future growth and challenge so that I can say with a nod to Johnson that when a man is tired of learning, he is tired of life.<\/p>\n

I hope this is a vision I can continue to share with new waves of migrants arriving on campus each fall.<\/p>\n
