received this email from Vista Higher Learning, a foreign language book publisher.  If you are creative and have a talent for making videos, here is an opportunity to make some $$$.

Language Learning for Life

It’s that time of year again! Last year language students from colleges and universities around the country submitted fun and meaningful videos to Vista Higher Learning’s Language Learning for Life video contest.

Six lucky students won $500 to put toward things like study abroad opportunities and textbooks. Students, instructors, and the Vista team enjoyed the contest so much that we are holding it again this year! We will once again ask your students to make a video that demonstrates how they think language study will benefit their local community or the wider global community.

For contest details, and to watch last year’s winning videos, visit VistaHigherLearning.com/supportlanguages.

Best regards,
The Vista Higher Learning Team

It’s an annual tradition.

Every fall the English 323 Poetry Workshop spends several weeks studying the art of spoken word poetry. The culmination of their efforts is a poetry slam.

The 16 poets will gather and each offer 2.5 minute performances of their poems. Three audience members will be chosen at random to serve as judges and deliver scores from 1-10 points. The poet with the highest score wins. The audience shouts its approval, hisses what it doesn’t like, and generally behaves like people having an extremely good time.

How can you not? You’re going to hear passionate words and language. It may be about the political scene, our culture, race, gender, or whatever the poet thinks is worth bringing to your attention. But rest assured. This is not doilies and flowers polite-type poetry. The goal is simple. To rock the joint.

So if you don’t have a class or a Summit commitment next Tuesday, cram into The Inkwell with us and give spoken word a try – a.h.

Conference on Campus

0 Commentsby   |  09.08.10  |  Announcement

The Department of Foreign Languages is hosting the annual conference of the North American Christian Foreign Language Association (NACFLA).

Mark this date on your calendar: April 7-9, 2011. We are looking forward to having language professors from across the country on our campus to share their scholarship. We hope you students will join us in this time of learning and fellowship with other Christian scholars who have a love for languages and cultures.

There will be sessions for student presentations, so we encourage you to submit a proposal. The following link (http://nacfla.net/pConferences.aspx) contains a download link for the call for papers document and the abstract submission form. Please read the call for papers document carefully to see what the emphasis of the conference is and how to word your proposal.

Your professors will be glad to help you think about your ideas for a presentation and give you some guidance to help your proposal be accepted. Please ask us if you have any questions.
