Community Factors<\/h2>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Drug use in the neighborhood<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Media portrayals of use<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>Suggestions for Preventing Substance abuse in our Kids<\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Individal Factors:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Teach emotional regulation and self-control<\/li>\n<li>Enroll child in activities that promote discipline, self-control, and confidence (martial arts, gymnastics, music\u2026)<\/li>\n<li>Get help for ADHD, depression, anxiety, eating d\/o\u2026<\/li>\n<li>Protect children from physical and sexual abuse; protect the child and seek help if they are abused<\/li>\n<li>Encourage a personal faith<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Family Factors:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Be warm and affectionate with your children<\/li>\n<li>Establish traditions that build family cohesion (Saturday we eat a big breakfast together, Sunday we go to church, annual family vacation, Thanksgiving we go to Grandma\u2019s).<\/li>\n<li>Check in with your kids daily<\/li>\n<li>Talk to your kids about drinking and drug use\u2014let them know you disapprove ESPECIALLY if it is present elsewhere in their lives<\/li>\n<li>Address your marriage issues; reduce conflict in the home<\/li>\n<li>Know who your kid\u2019s friends are, where they are going, and what they are up to<\/li>\n<li>Let kids help around the house and let older kids care for younger kids to some extent<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t let your children drink at home<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>PEER FACTORS:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Be cautious about who your children hang with<\/li>\n<li>Encourage them to hang with people who disapprove of drug use and with a positive (non-fatalistic), pro-social outlook<\/li>\n<li>Express your disapproval of use if they are around others who use<\/li>\n<li>Protect your child from bullying (and from bullying others)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Social &amp;
