I studied abroad in Leipzig, Germany as a part of the Global Healthcare Program. We primarily studied how culture relates to healthcare and religion. We shadowed physicians and healthcare providers and German hospitals and clinics, giving us direct learning experiences with a different way of approaching patient interactions. We studied global health systems and how funding and resources are allocated, enabling us to see room for improvement in our own system. We had the opportunity to visit a surgery clinic and clinical school in Leipzig, giving us the opportunity to examine the relationship between modern technology and medical services and education. We also studied the relationship between Christianinty and culture, specifically European and German culture. We visited Wittenbergy to explore Martin Luther\u2019s life and the start of the Protestant reformation, and the lasting impact that this had on Christianity as a whole. We had the opportunity to explore the evils that occured in East Germany through the last century, including Nazism and oppression under the Soviet Union, including how Christians and a culturally Chrisitan background played a role as these events unfolded, both positive and negative.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I was able to travel to Edinbergh, Scotland for one of our travel weekends, with two other classmates. There, we were able to hike to Arthur\u2019s Seat, a beautiful hill that overlooks the city and one of the fabled locations of Camelot. We were able to visit Edinburgh Castle and explore the history of the Scottish Monarchy. We explored the Water of Leith river as it passed through Dean Village, a small historic grain milling village on the outskirts of Edinburgh.<\/span><\/p>\n We traveled through Italy, visiting Venice, Rome, and Lake Como outside of Milan. We were very ambitious with this trip, trying to see as much as possible in a short time. In Venice, we were able to explore the city, ride the Gondola through the city canals, and have a cooking class with an Italian chef. We then took an overnight train to Rome. Here the plan was to save money and time by sleeping on the train. It did work out well, but it was not a very restful journey. In Rome, we were able to see some highlights such as the Colosseum, the Arch of Constaine, the Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain, and Vatican city.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Our last international journey led us to Prague, Czech Republic, where we explored Prague Castle, art museums, and the Jewish historical sites.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I am so thankful for this experience because it certainly gave me a broader cultural perspective, allowing me to understand other individuals better and shape how I can perceive the world. Through traveling in foreign lands, I gained wisdom and confidence in navigating through uncertain circumstances. I believe that I grew in understanding of mankind\u2019s relationship with beauty, ranging from scenery to ornate chapels and churches serving as a center of worship. I became more aware of cultural ways of thinking of which I take for granted.
