{"id":7546,"date":"2019-07-01T13:48:35","date_gmt":"2019-07-01T18:48:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/hr\/?p=7546"},"modified":"2019-07-01T13:48:35","modified_gmt":"2019-07-01T18:48:35","slug":"summer-reading-thought-questions-week-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/hr\/2019\/07\/01\/summer-reading-thought-questions-week-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer Reading Thought Questions &#8211; Week 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Note: This includes the third set of thought questions related to Austin Channing Brown\u2019s book, <\/em>I\u2019m Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In <em>White Fragility: Why it\u2019s so Hard for White People to Talk about Racism<\/em>, Robin Diangelo identifies key pillars of whiteness: (1) the belief that only bad people are racist; (2) how white people are taught to think of racism \u201cas discrete acts committed by individual people, rather than as a complex, interconnected system\u201d; and (3) how defensiveness when these dynamics are named maintains the racial status quo.<\/p>\n<p>I challenge us to examine the ways we may be resistant to conversations of race &#8212; conversations that may reveal we\u00a0are complicit in an oppressive system &#8212; and how we can work to build emotional stamina around conversations of race.<\/p>\n<p>As you begin thinking about your Fall semester, the Adams Center would like to remind you that Austin Channing Brown will be on campus Monday, September 9, 2019.
