The Innovation Foundry has partnered with several departments on the ACU campus on challenge-based projects. In leveraging various technologies, iF has been able to inspire collaborative innovation to solve several problems, as well as equip faculty and students with digital skills for the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

In partnership with Kelly Washington, college associate professor of biology, we use photogrammetry to create digital 3D models of some of the anatomy models used in the anatomy & physiology lab. Photogrammetry is a method of transforming physical resources into digital assets. Digital 3D model repositories allow students to access digital representations on or through mobile devices and computers with amazing precision. This technology provides several benefits to student interaction with learning tools at their desk in the classroom, virtually, or from their dorm room.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Abilene Christian University offers many biblical studies courses, including those specifically related to the narrative message of the Old Testament. It is difficult for students to visualize distant locations described in the Bible, and a picture or video representation is often a flat experience. The Innovation Foundry is working with Steve Hare, instructor of bible, missions, and ministry, to determine the impact of virtual reality on memory, student engagement, and learning experience. Participating students will explore Moses’ Tabernacle through virtual reality. Other faculty have created assignments for students to experience Herod’s Temple.<\/p>\n

Fostering creativity, as a part of increasing digital literacy, plays a role in preparing students for success beyond school. The classroom is a great place to not only obtain information and knowledge but also engage and interact with that information in creative ways. There are several opportunities, resources, and ideas available to ACU faculty to help promote creativity and creative problem-solving in the classroom through creative digital assignments. Students can also validate their digital skills by taking one or more Adobe Certified Professional exams free of charge.<\/p>\n

The Innovation Foundry finds itself to be in a unique location, as the University it serves has a wide variety of creative software it makes available to faculty, staff, and students. From the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, Office 365, Google G Suite, and much more, there are not too many things those who are on campus could need in their creative endeavors. However, to say that everyone is on the same playing field when it comes to digital literacy would be a huge assumption. The Innovation Foundry has been able to provide hour-long sessions dealing from basic to more advanced instruction in various tools available to them.<\/p>\n

This semester (Spring 2019), we are partnering with Dr. Daniel Morrison, Assistant Professor of Sociology, to provide support for students in Sociology 111 with their assignment on Infographics. The assignment is divided into 4 parts that are spread out over the course of the semester. For each part, we have three help sessions scheduled the week before it is due, and students sign-up for one or more of the help sessions.<\/p>\n

Our primary goal is to assist students with visualizing their data in an infographic using an\u00a0<\/span>online infographics builder<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    John Kaczmarek led several students and staff in a Raspberry Pi project in partnership with the Innovation Foundry and Maker Lab. The project is a first of it\u2019s kind pilot program in which participants built a distributed weather monitoring system utilizing the (Nerves) platform. This project followed an Innovation Foundry Friday talk John gave about the Internet of Things.<\/p>\n

    Partnering with Dr. Jim Carpenter, the course ENVR 440.01 asked the question \u201cWhat is\u00a0GIS,\u00a0and\u00a0why should I\u00a0care?\u201d\u00a0Geographic Information Systems allow us\u00a0to\u00a0analyze and manage\u00a0spatial\u00a0(geographic) data. From your\u00a0smartphone\u00a0to your tablet, location enabled devices are present in\u00a0almost every\u00a0household,\u00a0contributing to the flood\u00a0of geographic data available today. With over\u00a080%\u00a0of all\u00a0data\u00a0having some type of\u00a0spatial or geographical component,\u00a0GIS has relevancy \u00a0everywhere.\u00a0This course will introduce students to GIS and the principles of\u00a0spatial data\u00a0in their personal life as well\u00a0as applications of\u00a0GIS across various disciplines.\u00a0Major components of the course include computer\u00a0representation of\u00a0geographic\u00a0information,\u00a0the basics of GIS databases, spatial analysis with\u00a0GIS, and\u00a0application areas of GIS. At the end\u00a0of the course, students\u00a0will have an understanding\u00a0of elementary\u00a0GIS theory and examples of GIS-based solutions\u00a0in the world around them.<\/p>\n

    The Innovation Foundry has begun a partnership with ACU\u2019s NEXTLab (www.acunextlab.org<\/a>) as a way for their students to bring their poster presentation creations to us for guidance and help with their visual representations. The NEXTLab mission is to provide global solutions to the world\u2019s need for: energy that is less expensive and safer, water that is pure and abundant, and medical isotopes used to diagnose and treat cancer. By advancing the technology of molten salt reactors while educating the NEXT generation of leaders in nuclear science and engineering.<\/p>\n

    Caleb Hicks was one of the engineering students we were able to help. Below, you can click on the link to see one of the posters Caleb presented at a conference. Although not specifically a NEXTLab poster, it represents the kind of research the engineering students are doing.     Dr. Anita Broxson hand-picked four of her senior nursing students to participate in a research project whereby they would create a survey, develop and produce a video, and provide a means by which they could determine whether or not individuals would be able to gain a better understanding on how they could keep from contracting the Zika virus. Turns out, they did a really good job in not only attaining their objectives, but with some help from the Innovation Foundry, they were able to reach a larger audience by making the survey digital and able to host it on a learning management system to be used in several missions courses. The four students shared their experience with faculty and staff during an Adams Center Luncheon, and were able to talk about how they learned a great deal about how to incorporate technology into their project to get the results they were looking for, but also how this project can now continue to exist beyond their time here at Abilene Christian University. They would also present their research at the National Conference of Undergrad Research in Memphis, TN, in April of 2017.<\/p>\n
