{"id":400,"date":"2014-07-29T11:10:54","date_gmt":"2014-07-29T16:10:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/jenniferhuddleston\/?page_id=400"},"modified":"2016-08-16T13:31:10","modified_gmt":"2016-08-16T18:31:10","slug":"biology-department-expansion-of-criteria-for-tenure-and-promotion","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/jenniferhuddleston\/biology-department-expansion-of-criteria-for-tenure-and-promotion\/","title":{"rendered":"Biology Department Criteria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Biology Department Expansion of Criteria and Examples for Tenure and Promotion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Guidelines created September 2006<\/p>\n<p><strong>Promotion from Assistant to Associate Professor.<\/strong> The ACU promotion guidelines require that a person applying for promotion from assistant to associate professor must have accumulated at least six years of teaching experience, at least three of which are at the assistant professor level.\u00a0 The Department of Biology adds the requirement that the successful applicant must accumulate at least <strong>eight points<\/strong> from some combination of the &#8220;major&#8221; and &#8220;minor&#8221; items below, with at least <strong>six of the points coming from the &#8220;major&#8221; category<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Major items (2 points each):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Authorship of published books relevant to Biology.<\/li>\n<li>Joint authorship of published books relevant to Biology.<\/li>\n<li>Editorship of published books.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Publications and Patent\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/jenniferhuddleston\/scholarship\/publications\/\">Peer reviewed journal articles.<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">(10 points)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Book review editor of a journal.<\/li>\n<li>Major research studies published for some level of government.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/jenniferhuddleston\/scholarship\/presentations\/\" target=\"_blank\">Peer reviewed presentations at state, regional, and national level.<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">(2 points)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Conduction of a scholarly workshop in area of expertise.<\/li>\n<li>Receiving outside grant.<\/li>\n<li>Peer reviewed book review.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Minor items (1 point each):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Editorial board member of a journal.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/jenniferhuddleston\/scholarship\/presentations\/\" target=\"_blank\">Submitting papers, abstracts, posters<\/a>.<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> (13 points)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Funding of Research and Conference Travel\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/jenniferhuddleston\/scholarship\/funding-of-research\/\">Successful in-house grant.<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">(5 points)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Collaborator on any grant.<\/li>\n<li>Submission of outside grant.<\/li>\n<li>Reviewer for at least two grant applications by others.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Understanding #1:<\/strong> Involvement of students in research that results in a published paper or presentation (with the students being listed as co-authors or presenters) should count as some kind of <strong>&#8220;bonus&#8221;<\/strong>. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/jenniferhuddleston\/scholarship\/publications\/\" target=\"_blank\">(See Aerobiology paper published with Kathryn Preston)<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">(bonus)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Understanding #2:<\/strong> The stated &#8220;major\/minor&#8221; areas cannot reflect all of the possible situations and the department can change the interpretation as needed. <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">(patent as a result of work at UGA)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>REFLECTIONS ON BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT CRITERIA FOR TENURE AND PROMOTION:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have fulfilled the departmental criteria for tenure and promotion. I have not calculated the exact number of points as set forth by the above document. \u00a0I have accumulated\u00a0at least 12 points in the &#8220;major&#8221; category alone.
