{"id":336,"date":"2012-06-12T12:55:34","date_gmt":"2012-06-12T17:55:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/johnehrke\/?page_id=336"},"modified":"2012-08-18T13:27:29","modified_gmt":"2012-08-18T18:27:29","slug":"reaching-beyond-discipline","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/johnehrke\/collegiality\/reaching-beyond-discipline\/","title":{"rendered":"Reaching Beyond Discipline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Part of living in community at ACU in a practical sense means you are willing to work closely with not only those members of your department, but others outside your department to ensure the best experience for students and colleagues. \u00a0This page is devoted to highlight specific instances of collegiality that involved me reaching beyond my discipline to help meet the needs of others.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Taught three physics majors via correspondence studying abroad in Montevideo over the course of two years to help these students and the physics department meet their course requirements.<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/johnehrke\/files\/2012\/06\/1033_001.pdf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-673\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/johnehrke\/files\/2012\/06\/physics1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"718\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/johnehrke\/files\/2012\/06\/physics1.jpg 718w, https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/johnehrke\/files\/2012\/06\/physics1-150x70.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/johnehrke\/files\/2012\/06\/physics1-300x141.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/johnehrke\/files\/2012\/06\/physics1-490x231.jpg 490w, https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/johnehrke\/files\/2012\/06\/physics1-500x236.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 718px) 100vw, 718px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Beginning in late 2010, \u00a0I approached the physics department about possibly teaching a second semester of differential equations targeted primarily at their majors. \u00a0These talks culminated in the offering of MATH 440: Partial Differential Equations in Spring 2012. \u00a0The addition of this course lessened the burden on the Physics department to the point where they have shelved PHYS 385: Math of Physics and Engineering in lieu of MATH 440. \u00a0Throughout the development I consulted with members of their department to ensure the needs of their students were being met in the new course design. \u00a0We had a couple of lunch meetings and agreed upon a schedule for the course that was mutually beneficial for both departments. \u00a0I think the interdisciplinary work in this instance is a shining example of the spirit of collegiality that should be fostered among departments at the university.\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/johnehrke\/files\/2012\/08\/RustyTowellLetterofSupport.pdf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-675\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/johnehrke\/files\/2012\/06\/physics2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/johnehrke\/files\/2012\/06\/physics2.jpg 728w, https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/johnehrke\/files\/2012\/06\/physics2-150x79.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/johnehrke\/files\/2012\/06\/physics2-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/johnehrke\/files\/2012\/06\/physics2-490x260.jpg 490w, https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/johnehrke\/files\/2012\/06\/physics2-500x265.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0While serving on the UGEC I was tasked with helping to write the new course criteria for the Natural Sciences core menu. \u00a0I reached out to not only the members of the sub-committee and my department, but I went to each of the department heads in the sciences and communicated our intentions with the criteria and asked for feedback which was implemented in many cases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a title=\"Living in Community\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/johnehrke\/collegiality\/living-in-community\/\">&lt;&lt;&lt;
