<\/strong>I inherited online Greek I & II from my colleague Mindi Thompson in my second year at ACU, and I have taught it every year since then. This class and Theological Explorations have become the “staples” in my graduate teaching load. Every year I try to add new resources or try a new teaching technique to make online Greek as good as it can be (and hopefully better than the previous year). This fall is the first time that I have taught Greek I residentially for the GST. (Here are recent syllabi for BGRK 611<\/a> and BGRK 612<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/strong>I teach online History of Christianity I in the fall of odd years. In the fall of 2015, I taught the residential section as well, covering Jeff Childers’ usual residential load while he was on Study Abroad in Oxford. I worked on a revision of the course with Dr. Tera Harmon. She has just joined our faculty full-time after many years of service as one of our most stalwart online adjunct instructors, and I reflect on our partnership in the Collegiality<\/a> section. <\/strong>This is the only class I have taught every year that I have taught at ACU (every spring since 2016). The course description is quite broad, which allows me to focus on an area of research that I enjoy: early Muslim-Christian theological engagement. This class is in my wheelhouse, and it’s the one in which I feel most in my element. (Click here<\/a> for the syllabus.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/strong>In even fall semesters, I have taught a special topic class on historical theology, focusing on the development of Trinitarian doctrine through the end of the fourth century. We also relate this history to later Trinitarian thought. This fall the GST faculty will decide whether to make this course a regular offering in the catalog (if approved the new course number will be BIBD 631). My colleague Jeff Childers normally teaches elementary Syriac, but I taught it in my first semester while Jeff was in Oxford. While I had taught Greek many times, this was the first (and only, so far!) opportunity I’ve had to teach Syriac, which is my primary research language. I enjoyed the experience and learned a lot! <\/strong>Before we dropped the Core curriculum, I regularly taught junior-level Bible Core. For the first two semesters, I co-taught BCOR with Dr. Matt Roberson and then with Amy McLaughlin-Sheasby. <\/strong>After BCOR was discontinued, I began to teach Christianity and Culture. In my first semester teaching this class, mine was a Frankenstein of a syllabus: it was comprised of clumsily-stitched together elements from other professors’ syllabi and my BCOR syllabus as I tried to see what worked best. I am so appreciative of the undergraduate faculty who have allowed me to pick their brains about this course, especially Brad East, David Kneip, and Janine Morgan. Since then, I’ve been able to really make it my own and tailor it to subjects that I think are useful, timely, and of deep personal interest to the upper-level non-majors who take it. I started teaching this course online in the fall of 2020, and it has become a regular part of my fall semester load. The Story of Christian Spirituality is a class on the history of Christian spirituality for upper-level students.
