In addition to serving on the board since the fall of 2015, I gave a talk at our annual meeting during Summit in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\"><strong>Steering Committee Member for Syriac Studies, SBL\/AAR <\/strong>(2020\u2013present)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">I have served on the steering committee for the Syriac Studies sessions at the annual Society of Biblical Literature\/American Academy of Religion meeting for two years (a three-year commitment). Despite the disruption of holding SBL\/AAR fully online in November 2020, we organized two sessions; in November 2021, we had three sessions, and I served as the chair for one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\"><strong>Member of the English Translation Review Committee, Antioch Bible Translation<\/strong> (2021\u2013present)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">The Antioch Bible translation aims to provide a Syriac-English Bible translation for English-speaking members of the Syriac Orthodox Church. The project has three phases: 1) translation of the Syriac Bible into English; 2) checking the accuracy of the English translation; 3) finessing the style of the English translation so that it is smooth and easy to understand. I am involved in the second part of the process: Jeff Childers and I are working together to check the translation of the Old Testament prophets. (I think this could fit under &#8220;service to the church&#8221; instead, even though it&#8217;s not service to <em>my<\/em> denomination, but I put it here since I was invited to participate in the project because of my academic specialization.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>MISCELLANEOUS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">Here are some additional ways that I have served my guild:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-list\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\"><li>I was a judge for the Graduate Paper competition at the North American Syriac Symposium at Brown University in Providence, RI (June 2019). <\/li><li>I chaired a session at the North American Syriac Symposium at Brown University in Providence, RI (June 2019). <\/li><li>In 2018 I reviewed a journal article for <em>Hugoye: Journal of Syriac Studies<\/em>.<\/li><li>In 2019 I reviewed a monograph on John of Damascus for Gorgias Press.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:400\">Next page: <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/kelligibson\/service\/service-to-the-community-and-church\/\">Service to the Community and<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/kelligibson\/service\/service-to-the-community-and-church\/\"> Church<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Board Member of Restoration Quarterly (2015\u2013present) Restoration Quarterly is a peer-reviewed journal published by ACU.
