My scholarly interest focuses on the Psalter, an Old Testament introduction, and justice. I am my harshest critic as far as publishing is concerned. When I finished my dissertation in December 2006, my advisor William H. Bellinger Jr. told me to send it to Sheffield Academic Press for publication, which is an excellent publisher in my field. Yet I was not completely satisfied with the final product, and I’ve never bothered to send it to Sheffield or any other publishers. Before completing the dissertation I began to teach at Cascade College in Portland, Oregon where publishing was not required. Along with other aspects no requirement for publishing was a selling point for me to start my full-time teaching career at Cascade. This lack of publication quickly became problematic during my pre-tenure review in the Fall of 2015. The well-known phrase “publish or perish” became a reality for me. Since then I have responded to the suggestions by the pre-tenure review in numerous ways: picking up the Old Testament Introduction project again, completing the Timeless<\/em> project, reading a paper at the 99th Conference of Korean Society of Old Testament Studies in September 2015 and another at the Society of Biblical Literature International in July 2016, sending a dissertation chapter to the Restoration Quarterly<\/em>, submitting an article to Leaven<\/em>\u00a0which is forthcoming, and convening multiple sessions on the Bible, Justice and Law and reading a paper at the Christian Scholars Conference in 2015 and 2016. These projects however have not yet come to fruition in the form of a published product. This lack of publication is why I am applying for tenure only at this time.<\/p>\n

Since 2008 I have been working with a couple of dozen Old Testament professors who are affiliated with Churches of Christ to write a theological introduction to the Old Testament. I asked Danny Matthews and Kevin Youngblood to work with me as co-editors. In the Fall of 2011 we all started teaching at a new university – Youngblood at Harding and Matthews at Pepperdine – so the project was on hold for a few years so that each of may adjust to our new teaching environment. I shared the idea and progress of this textbook project with K. C. Hanson, editor in chief at Wipf and Stock, who liked the idea of this textbook project with numerous contributors whom he knows personally and told me to submit a proposal. I am currently working on this proposal now. When this project is completed and published, I will apply for a promotion separately.<\/p>\n

My dissertation title is \u201cPsalms 145-150: The Final Hallelujah Psalms as a Fivefold Doxology to the Hebrew Psalter.\u201d Only in recent months I shared one chapter \u201cPsalms 1-2 and Psalms 146-150: The Twofold Introduction and the Fivefold Doxology to the Hebrew Psalter\u201d with James Thompson, and he suggested I edit it for publishing in the Restoration Quarterly<\/em>. Since this is a chapter of my dissertation, at least a new introductory paragraph is needed. A few weeks ago James Thompson asked to see when I can send him the final draft. I told him I would send it to him after the Summit.<\/p>\n

I am also interested in the topic of justice since I regularly teach BIBL 454 Prophetic Literature at ACU. I have read papers and made presentations on the topic at various venues, and I have been working on the topic in a more comprehensive way at the Christian Scholars Conference for the past two years. In the pages that follow I will describe in detail how I have worked within these areas of study to satisfy the departmental requirements for tenure.<\/span><\/p>\n
