In 2013 I summarized our work in the Learning Studio during our first two years on campus in a way that might fairly reflect the ways I’ve tried to serve the broader university through projects that have had impact both on and beyond the ACU campus:

Ours is not simply the story of mastering the technical challenges of filming, editing and publishing media messages. We are committed to working with the ACU community to amplify the reach of their exemplary teaching, significant research and meaningful service as a part of our common mission. (Year Two Report)

Learning Studio development – In 2008-2009, I visited a dozen information commons and media centers around the country (before or after conferences or other personal travel) as well as numerous conference calls with colleagues I’ve worked with through EDUCAUSE or the New Media Consortium. These visits shaped conversations back on campus about the opportunities for informal learning spaces in our library as well as media to support digital literacies and training for students and faculty.

Learning Studio funding – In 2010 I worked with Phil Schubert, Kevin Roberts, Bill Rankin, and Dana Pemberton to write a $1.86 million grant to the AT&T Foundation that included the construction and staffing for three years of the new Learning Studio in the Library.

Learning Studio management – Since 2009 when the first Digital Media Center opened downstairs in the library with 2 student workers and 5 computers, I have directed media services in support of student and faculty academic projects. I now oversee hiring and productivity of 5 student workers and 2 full-time employees who manage reservations for 10 collaborative spaces and 50 pieces of audio/video gear.

Apple Distinguished School – In 2013 I worked with Susan Lewis and Lesa Breeding to author a section of the university’s application to become an Apple Distinguished School and then designed and delivered the proposal in iBooks format.

ACU Blogs – In 2009 in my Adams Center role, I advocated for a mobile-friendly course blog platform and led a semester-long faculty pilot to test the tools. Once WordPress was approved as a viable campus platform, I worked with Mike Wiggins to develop a custom blog theme for fall classes that year. Since then, we developed other blog themes to support Cornerstone and portfolio tools for student blogging in advanced classes like GST. The ACU Blogs WordPress system currently includes user accounts for 12,638 users (past and present) and 9,789 blogs.

Cornerstone – In 2010, I worked with Greg Straughn to develop the Cornerstone Spotlight experience in Cullen Auditorium. This included planning video production of 14 faculty presentations, consulting on mobile tools to support student engagement, and media support for podcast and digital storytelling assignments. From that first year, I’ve worked with Greg, Nancy Shankle, and Cliff Barbarick to pre-plan and run-through 49 Spotlight sessions.

Digital Academy – During our three years of AT&T funding, we began working with Nil Santana in 2010 to deliver digital photography workshops in Gruene that introduce faculty to basic exposure, lighting, and composition through an experiment in collaborative creativity that includes a full-day of shooting and critique.

Digital Storytelling Class Visits – In response to faculty interest in storytelling projects in their classes, I have personally visited Cornerstone, Psychology, Social Work, and Teacher Training classes to lead script consultations. Then Learning Studio media specialists schedule partial or full class meetings for faculty across campus. In 2013-14 our media specialists taught over 60 classes and over 1,000 students on campus.

Advanced Workshops – We’ve been working with Nil Santana , Al Haley, and the Center for Digital Storytelling since 2010 to lead high quality faculty workshops in support of media fluency. Then in 2012 and 2013 we scheduled advanced workshops for returning participants to continue to develop new skills working with professional photographers and media producers. In 2012 Scott Martin worked with faculty on long-exposure night photography in Marfa, and then in 2013, in partnership with the College of Arts & Sciences, we brought in Bill Frakes who led student and faculty events over a week in Abilene.

Connected Events – Between 2008 and 2011 ACU hosted hundreds of visitors from colleges in the region and across the country interested in hearing about programs in mobile learning at ACU. I worked with the program planning teams to develop full conferences and one-day events that allowed guests to tour facilities like the Learning Studio, participate in classroom demos leveraging classroom polling and discussion tools like HeadsUp, and connect with experts from other universities we were working with around common themes. The Media and Mobility track I planned in 2011 brought in colleagues from USC, Penn State, and Purdue.

Connected Videos – Among the first videos I produced at ACU were annual interviews with faculty from a range of disciplines sharing their work with mobile tools in and out of the classroom.
