Deonna (Moore ’00) Shake, instructor of Cycling for Fitness at ACU’s Kinesiology and Nutrition Departmentincorporates bicycle maintenance into the curriculum and collaborates with the Maker Lab.  Darren Wilson, Maker Lab Director, shares, “A year ago, we added an area inside the Maker Lab designated for bicycle repair, and many people have come in to use it.  Students come in to learn how to fix flat tires, adjust brakes and shifting and perform preventative maintenance.” It was in this collaboration that Shake learned that Darren enjoyed cycling as much as she does, so she invited him to join the class every Monday for their afternoon class rides.  Shake shares, “ I try to recruit local riders to join my class when they can. Darren is our extra rider, providing safety and mechanical expertise during our bike rides.” “Sometimes, the best opportunities to learn bicycle repair is on the side of the road as problems present themselves,” Wilson added. “It’s been fun teaching outside and watching students experience learning through these unique situations.”
