{"id":116,"date":"2017-11-27T15:47:05","date_gmt":"2017-11-27T21:47:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/mu_sigma\/?p=116"},"modified":"2017-11-27T15:47:05","modified_gmt":"2017-11-27T21:47:05","slug":"problem-of-the-week-problem-3-fall-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/mu_sigma\/2017\/11\/27\/problem-of-the-week-problem-3-fall-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Problem of the Week &#8211; Problem 3 &#8211; Fall 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>ACU Mathematics Problem of the Week<\/strong><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Problem 3 &#8211; November 27th, 2017<\/p>\n<p>The Problem of the Week competition, sponsored by Mu Sigma, is now live. \u00a0This week&#8217;s problem can be found below or slips of paper with the problem description can be found on the main bulletin board in the math department. \u00a0Students have two weeks from issuance of the problem to construct a solution. \u00a0Simple answers will not suffice for most problems. \u00a0Your solution must demonstrate a solution method and communicate some understanding of that method to qualify. \u00a0Students with correct responses will be identified on this blog and the math bulletin board, and the student or students with the most correct responses during the year will be recognized at the departmental dinner each spring. \u00a0This competition is open to all students regardless of major or affiliation with the department. \u00a0You may return your solutions to Gaye in the math office any time before noon on the final day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Issued: \u00a0Monday, November 27th<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Return Solutions By: \u00a0Dead Day, December 11th<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b>How Big Is Your Pizza?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Thanks to a national pizza chain for inspiring this problem.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>A Pizza House advertisement states that their large pizza is 14.7% bigger than Domingo&#8217;s large pizza, and a full inch wider than Papa Jim&#8217;s large pizza.
