{"id":219,"date":"2012-07-23T23:59:03","date_gmt":"2012-07-24T04:59:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/oxb00a\/?page_id=219"},"modified":"2018-09-21T00:35:29","modified_gmt":"2018-09-21T05:35:29","slug":"system-design","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/oxb00a\/system-design\/","title":{"rendered":"Systems Design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Charles West Churchman was a philosopher, systems scientist, and a visionary in systems design.\u00a0His writings emphasize the importance of attention to nature\u00a0in our\u00a0design efforts; thus, our design of systems should be cognizant of an ultimate Creator (see <em>The Design of Inquiring Systems, Basic Concepts of Systems and Organizations<\/em>, Basic Books, New York (1971). Before she died in 2009, Churchman&#8217;s wife made this comment about her husband:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Academic philosophy wasn&#8217;t satisfying to him. He demanded that philosophy have meaning in the world. He wanted to insert an ethical dimension into science. And he really made it his job to remind all these CEOs that they had ethical responsibilities.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Before his death in 2004, Churchman\u00a0received the 1999 LEO Award for Lifetime Exceptional Achievement in Information Systems.\u00a0 This award is presented by AIS, a student chapter of which resides\u00a0at ACU, for which I am an advisor.<\/p>\n<p>With Churchman&#8217;s\u00a0vision in mind, I have sought to direct my research towards improving the design and use of information systems for the good of business and the individuals they serve.\u00a0 Links to representative\u00a0samples\u00a0of this research are included in the following narrative:<\/p>\n<p>Raghu, T.S., Sinha, R., Vinze, A., Burton, O. Information Systems Research, Jun2009, Vol. 20 Issue 2, p218-236, 19p. <em>(H-Index of 135)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This paper was part of a five year effort with researchers at Arizona State University.\u00a0 Although originally part of my dissertation, I moved into a different area to support the development of a system to address bioterrorism detection for the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, based in Phoenix, AZ.\u00a0 This work also produced two conference papers which I presented at the <a title=\"Willingness to Pay AMCIS\" href=\"http:\/\/aisel.aisnet.org\/amcis2003\/218\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Americas Conference for Information Systems AMCIS)\u00a0in 2003<\/a>, which is the national conference for AIS.\u00a0 <em>Information Systems Research<\/em> (ISR) is regarded as a Tier 1 Research 1 level publication in the IS\u00a0academic community.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/oxb00a\/files\/2018\/09\/HIS-Book-Order-Form-Contributors-12.doc\">Challenges for Bioterrorism Preparedness in Public Health Decision Processes and Resources<\/a>\u00a0(2008), in Hsinchun Chen, T.S.
