{"id":487,"date":"2012-08-10T12:56:46","date_gmt":"2012-08-10T17:56:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/oxb00a\/?page_id=487"},"modified":"2018-09-19T03:08:27","modified_gmt":"2018-09-19T08:08:27","slug":"student-research-mentoring","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/oxb00a\/student-research-mentoring\/","title":{"rendered":"Undergraduate and Graduate Student Research Support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have been involved in many aspects of student research.\u00a0 I believe involving students in research improves their performance in a learning community.\u00a0 Although I have worked with many students, both at ACU and globally through the MSR doctoral dissertation program, my most memorable time spent was with Jess Weeden, a psychology student who became interested in my research when she was a student in the Core Program.\u00a0 Jess traveled with me to many conferences and decided to attend graduate school at the University of Georgia after graduating from ACU.\u00a0 Jess was a model student during her undergraduate studies and her story was read by Dr. Schubert during the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/oxb00a\/files\/2018\/09\/JessgraduationStory.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spring 2014 graduation commencement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Representative samples of student mentoring at ACU are provided as follows:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Undergraduate Research:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Conference Presentation: <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/oxb00a\/files\/2018\/09\/Poster-Template-for-the-ACU-Undergraduate-Research-Festival1.pptx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biometric and Psychometric Indices in Yahoo Dataset<\/a>. <em>ACU Undergraduate Research Festival, March 2016<\/em> with C. Supported research with E.J. Johnson, IV, Marketing major, entitled, <a title=\"Generation Y Marketing\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/oxb00a\/files\/2012\/08\/Direct-Marketing-Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cGeneration Y Marketing through Social Networking\u201d, <\/a>paper and conference presentation.<\/p>\n<p>McNair Scholars mentor and advisor, summer 2009. Supported research with Sandy Marshall,\u00a0business\u00a0major,\u00a0entitled, <a title=\"Stratified Banking\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.acu.edu\/oxb00a\/files\/2012\/08\/Sandy-Final-Paper-0801409-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cStratified Banking Practices and Economic Stability: A Content Analysis of Black Wall Street\u201d,\u00a0<\/a>for a paper and conference presentation.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Mead (2010-2011) &#8211; conducted research through interviews for data collection efforts to support\u00a0the development of a book under\u00a0the working title:\u00a0 <em>Personal Excellence: A Guide to Teaching African-American Students in Christian Higher Education, <\/em>also proposal for<em> Personal Excellence:\u00a0 The Art of Influence and Affluence in a Relationally Divided World (Joseph Meade).\u00a0 <\/em>Both titles promote the concept of being Missional (21st Century Vision) in diverse student populations in higher education.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle Smith (2010 thru 2014) &#8211; supported the revision\u00a0and submission of a\u00a0paper for Journal of Management, Spirituality, and Religion (JMSR) entitled, \u201cEvaluating the role of a non-profit in missional change management\u201d.\u00a0 This paper was written to promote missional management as a grand theory similar in form to Adaptive Structuration Theory (AST), as proposed in IS research by DeSanctis and Poole in 1996.\u00a0Kyle used this experience to\u00a0apply for law school and was accepted at Pepperdine Law School in fall 2010. Kyle finished law school and became the Assistant\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Attorney<\/span>\u00a0General for the state of Texas in 2014 and is active in the IJM (International Justice Mission).<\/p>\n<p>Coordinated consulting\/internship\/mentoring relationship with local company \u2013 Instrument Maintenance \u2013 for e-commerce and ERP courses.\u00a0 Company funded $4000 for a Research Assistant for fall 2010 and spring 2011, and awards for team projects in both classes.\u00a0 Joseph Mead served this company as a student web developer under a spring 2011 internship.<\/p>\n<p>Received approval to use iPads in research for students enrolled in the spring 2011 IS410 ERP Systems course.\u00a0 Students studied the use of mobile technologies to increase the efficiency of decision making processes in companies using ERP systems. Supports SAP&#8217;s mobile initiative for enterprise systems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Graduate Research:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>David Galaz\u00a0&#8211; Taught independent study special topics graduate research course, summer 2010<\/p>\n<p>Serge Galore &#8211; spring and summer 2010, worked with graduate student on Health Care research in Africa<\/p>\n<p>Xiaojuan Wang &#8211; worked from 2010 to present with graduate student from China to develop blackbox (application planning stage) for a relationship management system for businesses in China<\/p>\n<p>Wenxin Yan &#8211; fall 2010, spring 2011, worked with graduate engineering student from China to develop a hybrid environmental\/energy system and business simulation<\/p>\n<p><strong>Entrepreneurship:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Assigned projects for four student teams\u00a0to complete in the 2010 Springboard competition and worked with a student application development team to compete in the 2011 Springboard competition.
