Sigma Phi Omega

Gerontology’s Honor Society, Sigma Phi Omega, is nationally known through the Association of Gerontology for Higher Education (AGHE).  ACU’s chapter,  Alpha Chi Upsilon, is a very active part of the student outreach.  Sigma Phi Omega sponsors the ‘Careers in Aging Week’ held yearly on campus along with various guest speakers. Guest speaker in Spring 2011 was Libby Embry, one of the spokespeople for the National Alzheimer’s Association Early Stage Advisory Group.

They also encourage volunteerism among students interested in serving older adults.  One such outreach is through the Area Agency on Aging.  Students can become certified Ombudsmen and advocate for residents in local nursing homes.  Learning conflict resolution skills becomes a valuable asset.
